Lost Landscapes of Oakland
Join film archivist Rick Prelinger for the first San Francisco screening of his East Bay-focused film -- a new chapter in his series of 'Lost Landscapes' screenings that have previously taken viewers to San Francisco, Detroit and Los Angeles. This montage of rediscovered and rarely-seen historical film clips shows Oakland and neighboring cities from the 1910s through the 1970s, as captured by amateurs, newsreel cameramen, and industrial filmmakers. Footage includes family-made travelogues of Oakland; slums and urban renewal; the 1923 Berkeley fire; trains, boats and planes; an explanation of how the gentle East Bay climate makes workers more productive; African American family life in the 1930s and 1940s; and much more.
