Twenty-five years ago, a small group encouraged by DCR and MassDOT started advocating for a bike route from Vermont to Connecticut. A group of Adams citizens had worked hard to get the Commonwealth to purchase the abandoned rail line between Adams and Lanesborough. Meanwhile, a Pittsfield group was working to extend it to Pittsfield.
The Berkshire Bike Path Council was formed in 1999 with a then-dubbed crazy idea of a path from Vermont to Connecticut. Now celebrating every additional mile built, the group has representatives throughout the county working to make the vision a reality. With over 12 miles of off-road bike path now considered an institution in Berkshire County, BBPC has expanded its mission to include safe cycling throughout Berkshire County on trails, roads, and paths. The core mission of a north-south cycling spine continues, with the recent opening of the Mohican Recreational Path in Williamstown, and a new extension of the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail in Pittsfield. Similar efforts are underway by our counterparts in Vermont to explore a trolley line trail that runs from Williamstown north to Bennington along a former rail bed.
This event takes place immediately following the Bike Month Kickoff ride in downtown Pittsfield. All are welcome to this gathering, whether they rode or not. ____________________________________________________________________________
