Going Local: The Role of Local Economies in a Sustainable Society
The mission of the Network is to inspire and guide business leaders to transform our region to a model of sustainability. What role can a regionalized, local economy play in fulfilling the Network's mission? Our speaker will challenge the assumption that multinational chains are more efficient and profitable because of their scale and international reach. He will also share what impact "going local" can have on our economy and discuss strategies that consumers, investors, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and local economic development agencies can take to create sustainable local economies.
Shuman will present a vision of how local communities can work and succeed through local business ownership, and circulation of money spent on locally produced high-quality goods and services. Communities can create level playing fields for local and global companies, by requiring global companies to pay the same local taxes, support local schools and transportation, and comply with zoning as local companies do. Please join us for this thought provoking look at business and explore how Portland can benefit from a strong local economy.
