About the Courtyard Marriott Hotel: Designed by William Templeton Johnson as the San Diego Trust & Savings Bank, its cornerstone was laid in November 1927 and it opened for business early in 1928. Perhaps the most expensive real estate development in city history to that time, the site alone cost $600,000 (more than $8 million in current dollars). The design embraced the spirit of Henry Hobbs Richardson and Louis Sullivan's pioneering Chicago high-rise buildings, including tripartite composition, a restrained facade that emphasized verticality but adorned with restrained arches and carefully executed exterior ornamentation employing naturalistic motifs. The main banking hall is marked by soaring, exuberant coffered ceilings, colorful marble-clad floors/walls and various pendant lights/sconces. Designated a San Diego historic site in 1996, the building was beautifully restored in 1999 and converted to a hotel.
About William Templeton Johnson, FAIA (1877-1957): Born on Staten Island, New York, in 1877, Johnson was thrust into roofing work at the age of twelve when his father died. This sparked his interest in architecture, which he continued to pursue through his schooling at New York's Columbia University and in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts from 1908 to 1911. He began his practice in San Diego in 1912 and was elevated to fellowship in the AIA in 1939. He was President of AIA San Diego in 1931. Johnson died at his home in Mission Hills in 1957, leaving behind a legacy of important public and private buildings throughout the city.
Johnson was among the most prolific 20thc. San Diego architects and many of his buildings are still standing; The Francis Parker School (1913), The Old La Jolla Library (1921), the San Diego Museum of Art (1926), Samuel I. Fox Building (1929), Serra Museum/Presidio Hill Park (1929), Natural History Museum (1933), Old Main Post Office & the County Administration Center (both 1936/37) and the former Main Branch of the San Diego Public Library (1953). During his career, Johnson also designed many residences including his own home.
