Ornamental Woodcarving
In this class we will be covering European-styled carving chisels and gouges, learn important carving techniques with wood and basic tool sharpening.
The project design is a Fleur-de-lis, a symbol used for centuries throughout Europe. The design used in this class is from Norway.
A basic set of tools is available to use in this class. The wood material is included in the class fee.
There are 3 class sessions in this series. Dates: February 7th, 14th and 28th Time:10:30am to 1:30pm
Instructor Bio Mark Olsen 1984 - Attended a series of crafts classes on furniture restoration and ornamental woodcarving at Sätergläntan Hemslöjdens Gård in Insjön, Sweden.
Mark spent the following 2 years training in ornamental woodcarving and furniture building in Norway and Sweden. 1985/86 Attended Hjerleid Vidargånde Skole in Dovre, Norway (Gudbrandalen) The course was called Treskjæring - Husflid which focused on furniture making with an emphasis on traditional woodcarving. 1986/87 Invited to Tibro, Sweden to study under 2 professional woodcarvers, Bengt Johansson and Jonas Carlsson. Each of them had over 40 years experience and trained under the most highly-skilled woodcarvers in Swedens past. Upon returning to the Seattle area, Mark worked with local interior designers on many custom projects such as the fire restoration at St. Marks Episcopal Cathedral on Capitol Hill. Eventually, that led to the design and construction of fireplace mantels, doors and trim in the custom home market.
