LABAlive PRESENTS
Mother: Martyr
THURSDAY APRIL 24, 7:30 PM

A salon-style evening of theater, dance and art inspired by ancient Jewish texts.

Tickets $18. Running Time 90 minutes. Wine, snacks and schmoozing to follow.

Three new works from 2013-2014 LABA Fellows explore the element of sacrifice in motherhood. Because mommy doesn't always get everything mommy wants.

THEATER
"Hurricane" by Brooke Berman
"Hurricane" a work in progress, is an excerpt from a new play exploring contemporary parenthood and the shift in identity faced by mothers who have had full adult lives before giving birth.  "Hurricane" follows Rose, an ex Riot Grrl, grappling with an identity crisis after becoming a wife and mother at 40, and her husband Ethan, a secret daddy blogger.  How do you grow up when your livelihood entailed not doing so?

DANCE
"Leaning Into Moisture  about my mother" by Yehuda Hyman
"You shall not boil a kid in its mother's milk." (Exodus 23:19)
Well, ok, but is it permissible for the adult kid to go swimming in the hot milk of his mother's secret love life?  References to Melina Mercouri, Russian furriers, and inappropriate relationships are intentional.

ART
Three new works by Argentinian fellow Mirta Kupferminc
Through the inhabitable sculptures "S-Naked" and "Eve:Chair of all Mothers," and the video work "Divine Desire" Kupferminc explores that tricky place where desire and motherhood intersect.

LECTURE
LABA's Ruby Namdar tells us about the bible's Tamar, a woman whose need to procreate pushed her to disguise herself as a prostitute and seduce her father-in-law. Really.
