Spray Cans in the Gallery: The Legendary Fashion Moda & the Fun Gallery
Street art has long been a presence in New York City, never more prominent than during the "Golden Age of Graffiti" in the late 70's and early 80's. During this time period graffiti transitioned from an underground art form to the mainstream contemporary art world. At the cutting edge of this movement was Fashion Moda, Stefan Eins' South Bronx outpost of the international art world that introduced neighborhood street artists, photographers and filmmakers to artists from downtown and Europe, creating an electrically exciting salon that profoundly influenced all who took part. Downtown, the scene was represented by Patty Astor, who hosted shows in her East Village storefront, the Fun Gallery, that brought together the artists, b-boys and MCs from uptown, the Bronx and East New York with the East Village culturati, the club scene and art and film world.
The City Lore Gallery will host a conversation between Patty Astor, Stefan Eins, Jane Dickson, and Diego Cortez (confirmed?) about this historic transition in hip hop culture and its resonance in today's graffiti and street art scene.
