Ephemeral Landscapes: The Transformation & Destruction of Public & Street Art
The conversation around street art and its place in the art world is an ever-contentious debate. Part of its allure is the ephemeral state it exists in. Its insecure status evokes a sense of mystique and rebellion challenging the establishments of art and society. Continuously, works of considerable magnitude are erased from this city's memory with the quick stroke of a brush, white-washed to oblivion. Street artists will gather in a conversation moderated by City Lore Folklorist, Elena Martinez, at the City Lore Gallery to discuss this artwork that decorates the neighborhoods of the South Bronx, El Barrio, the Lower East Side, and parts of Queens and Brooklyn, and the significance, protection, and transience of street & public art as cultural cornerstones in a rapidly developing city.
