Event
The Simplicity of Vegetable Gardening
Join Slow Food Knoxville and Food Not Bombs at The Birdhouse for two gardening sessions:
Sunday, April 19th from 2pm to 4pm We will go over the basics of site selection, soil composition, and bed construction as we build a raised bed and plant a selection of spring crops. We will also discuss container gardening for small spaces. The cost of this workshop is $5 to cover materials.
Sunday, May 10 from 2pm until 5pm *FREE* This is a work day! We will install summer crops into the large Hugelkultur garden in back of the Birdhouse. Topics will include Hugulkutur basics, companion planting, and garden maintenance such as watering and natural pest control. Bring a dish containing a local ingredient and stay for a community potluck starting at 5.
The Birdhouse is located in the 4th and Gill neighborhood of Knoxville, and is a community space dedicated to promoting emerging artists, musicians, and activists. The garden we create together will serve as a teaching space where people can come to learn about gardening. The produce from this garden will be used in the free meals Food Not Bombs shares every Saturday @ 2:30 @ Krutch Park in downtown Knoxville.
