St Patrick's Night at The Rocky Mountain Folk Club, featuring The Oak Trio
David Morrissey, Emilie Kirwan and Dan Mills, three talented Calgary musicians, frequented the lively Oak Tree Tavern session on late Sunday afternoons in Calgary for many years. David, from County Kildare, has developed a percussive style of playing which has been described as the engine of sessions. Emilie is from Ballynacally in Co. Clare, and is a marvelous fiddler. She has a Masters degree in Traditional Irish music performance. Dan is an accomplished musician from Newfoundland, and was a mainstay in the band The Freels with Fergus OByrne and Maria Peddle.
Opening the night is Called by the Sea. Whether singing a traditional song from the British Isles or a modern song that sounds like it could be trad, Called By the Sea brings life to their music through energetic vocals and engaging instrumentation. Doug Baker and Michael Pollock are skilled musicians who have been part of the Calgary music scene for many years in a variety of groups (Twisted Roots, Tessitura, Diminished Fifth, Sunday Nite Band). They tell fascinating musical stories that will make you tap your feet, sing and laugh along.
