Kung Pao Kosher Comedy Presents... Comedy Returns to El Rio!
Now in its 5th year, this monthly (every 3rd Thursday of the month) multicultural comedy show features an eclectic mix of comedians from the Bay Area and beyond. The show has been catering to standing room only audiences since moving from Monday to Thursday night this past January.
This month's comedians are British, Pakistani, Muslim, African American, Latino, and Jewish and originally hail from England, Mexico, Guatemala, New York and San Francisco: Shazia Mirza (London-based; BBC; 60 Minutes; NY Times; Last Comic Standing) Carla Clayy (San Francisco native; one of SF's most hysterical comedians), Victor Escobedo (Mexico City-born; co-owner of Papalote Mexican Grill), Belo Cipriani (Guatemala-born; blind writer, performer, teacher, activist), and Lisa Geduldig (hostess).
Shazia Mirza (headliner) is a British comedian who was raised in a strict Muslim environment. Born and educated in Birmingham, England, she is the daughter of first-generation Pakistani immigrants and is a trained biochemist. Shazia reluctantly pursued a career as a science teacher while secretly honing her writing, acting, and comedy skills part time at an acting school and with late-night gigs across the UK. She grabbed national attention in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks by performing her act in recognizable hijab dress and beginning with the remark, "My name is Shazia Mirza. At least, that's what it says on my pilot's license." That year she won her first award - at the London Comedy Festival. In 2003, she was listed in The Observer as one of the 50 funniest acts in British comedy. Shazia performs sold-out shows all over the world including such hot spots as Dubai, Kosovo, Pakistan, and Texas (but San Francisco is her favorite place in the whole world to perform). She has appeared on 60 Minutes, has been featured in The New York Times, on Last Comic Standing, and on the BBC's Have I Got News For You. Her hit shows have included The Last Temptation of Shazia Mirza and Portrait of Shazia Mirza. http://www.Shazia-Mirza.com
Carla Clayy is a native San Franciscan who has spent the last decade and a half making people laugh all over the country. She won the Marshall's Women in Comedy Competition in 2001 and was awarded a guest spot at its Marin County show, sharing the stage with Paula Poundstone, Joy Behar, and Rene Hicks. Carla is a regular at The Punchline, Cobb's, and comedy clubs in such hotspots as Modesto and Chico and has shared the stage with Robin Williams.
Victor Escobedo's smart commentary and keen observations will have you thinking like a Mexican and laughing in Spanish! Be prepared to show your papers and get ready to cross the border of laughter. Victor is the host of The Comedy Workout Room on Thursday nights at Stars in Vacaville. The Mexico Ciy-born comedian can be found in the Papalotemobile delivering Papalote Salsa to over 100 stores throughout the Bay Area. He also defeated Bobby Flay in Food Network's Throwdown! with Bobby Flay with the amazing Triple Threat Burrito from Papalote Mexican Grill, that he co-owns here in San Francisco.
Belo Cipriani is an award-winning author, speaker and a spokesman for Guide Dogs for the Blind. He was born in Guatemala to parents of Italian and Brazilian heritage and is fluent in Spanish, Portuguese, and English. His first book, Blind: A Memoir (2011), received a blurb from Amy Tan and has been profiled in the San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco Examiner, San Jose Mercury News, Huffington Post, Advocate Magazine, among others. It received an honorable mention for "best debut novel/book" and "best non-fiction" by the Rainbow Awards (2011), was awarded an honorable mention by the Eric Hoffer Book Awards (2012), and is a finalist for the First Horizon Award (2012). Before evolving into a fulltime writer, Belo worked as a systems engineer, and a technical recruiter. He is one of very few blind Capoeira players in the world. He is currently the Writer-in-Residence at Holy Names University. Belo has done a handful of comedy open mics in the past. http://www.belocipriani.com
Lisa Geduldig is a local comic and comedy producer who's the creator, producer, and MC of a variety of comedy shows including Kung Pao Kosher Comedy (which celebrates its 22nd year this December); Funny Girlz: A Smorgasbord of Women Comedians; The Color of Funny: A Multi-Cultural Comedy Show; and A Muslim, A Mormon, and A Jew Walk into A Bar: The Comedy of Religion.
