Members Only: Season Launch Party
Apr 03
Free member event!
Thursday, Apr 03 at 06:00PM
Join us on April 3 for a celebration of our new April/May season, have a drink on us, and watch a program of Yugoslav Kino Club films: a free screening and discussion for members only, hosted by our program director Courtney Sheehan.
From the late 1950s through 1980, many of the best filmmakers from the former Yugoslavia got their start in an amateur filmmaking group called Academic Cine-club, based in Belgrade. Not unlike the Film Forum, the club offered courses and lectures for members and the general public on amateur filmmaking, as well as published handbooks.
DuĊĦan Makavejev (whose film W.R.: MYSTERIES OF THE ORGANISM will screen as part of our Red Renewal series on April 16) was one of many notable Yugoslav directors who first started making films in the Cine-club. The group encouraged experimentation with form, and yielded dozens of excellent short avant-garde films that have rarely been screened outside of the region. Tonight we'll watch a selection of these short films together and discuss afterwards. Bar opens at 6pm; screening and conversation at 7pm.
