Devorah Heitner, PhD, is the acclaimed author of Growing Up in Public: Coming of Age in a Digital World (2023) and Screenwise: Helping Kids Thrive (and Survive) in Their Digital World (2016). Dr. Heitner has a PhD in Media/Technology and Society from Northwestern and has taught at DePaul University and Northwestern. She speaks globally about digital well-being, parenting, screentime, digital citizenship, mindful tech use and raising empathetic kids in an always connected world.
In her lecture, Dr. Heitner will discuss how parents can mentor and not just monitor their kids as they grow up on Roblox, Instagram, TikTok, Discord and other social media apps; how adults can help kids be thoughtful about their digital footprint and reputation; strategies for teaching tweens and teens how to recognize how social media affects their mood and mental health; and how to help our kids (and ourselves) find balance between plugged and unplugged activities.
Pamela Wu, Director of News and Media Relations for UC Davis Health, will moderate the event, which will include a 50 minute lecture by Dr. Heitner followed by a 30 minute Q&A and a book signing.
