Winter 2023: Rutters "Magnificat" and Hagenberg's "Illuminare"
In December 2023, the Chorale's program will feature John Rutters Magnificat, which has come to be one of the great choral works of the holiday season. The winter concert also includes Elaine Hagenberg's Illuminare, a five-movement work for chorus and chamber orchestra exploring themes of darkness and light.
Rutter's Magnificat, first performed in 1990, is an extended musical setting of the Magnificat of Christian scripture, the canticle sung by Jesus' mother Mary when she visits her cousin Elizabeth. llluminare is Hagenbergs first extended work; using lesser-known sacred Latin texts, the piece takes us through a season of beauty and goodness that has been disrupted by darkness and confusion. But as Light gradually returns, hope is restored, illuminating our future and guiding us in peace.
Ryan Tibbetts will conduct the singers and orchestra, and nationally-renowned organist Daniel Stipe will accompany. Please plan to attend and enjoy the classical as well as the contemporary with your entire family!
