'What Influences a Mother's Decisions about Breastfeeding: The Reasons Behind the Reasons'
Come socialize and celebrate with friends, collagues and the 2009 BCW Award Recipients.
Julie Reeder, PhD, Senior Research Analyst with the State of Oregon WIC will share the results of her 5 year study of nearly 2000 mothers enrolled in WIC.
More about the research: To explore the efficacy of different methods of breastfeeding support, the Oregon WIC program implemented and evaluated two different levels of telephone based peer support, with the objective of increasing breastfeeding duration and exclusivity. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected on 1,933 English or Spanish speaking mothers who were enrolled in the study during pregnancy and followed through six months postpartum.
In conclusion, breastfeeding peer counseling had a mixed effect on breastfeeding rates among Oregon WIC participants. It is unlikely that exclusive breastfeeding rates can be substantially improved without closer examination and revision of hospital policies related to formula supplementation. It is vital that WIC and others in the lactation community understand that the reasons why women introduce formula are multiple and complex.
