Cussing at the Moon
Cussing at the Moon is the story of three estranged adult sisters who come together after one of them makes a surprising and ill-fated leap from the Aurora Bridge, landing in a coma at Harborview Medical Center. The investigation of these rather eccentric women, the dynamics of their familial relationships, and the patchwork faith that constitute their very individual spirituality takes them from the hospital room to the surreal internal world of a coma patient and back again. Through consultation of a deified Angelina Jolie, a harassed agent, and a rather put-out Snow White, they emerge on the other side wiser, sanctified, and a wee bit exposed.
Nebunele is a five-year-old physical ensemble theatre company in Seattle. This new play Cussing at the Moon is supported by a Groups Projects grant from 4Culture. Their previous show, Medea Knows Best, premiered as the headline show in San Franciscos EXIT Theatres DIVAFest. Their second show, The Secret Ruths of Island House, toured to Fringe festivals in New York, Boulder, and San Francisco, garnering critical acclaim at all three festivals and winning the Pick of the Fringe: Gold award in Boulder and the Best New Play award in San Francisco. Nebunele strives to continually challenge itself as a company and create original, cohesive works of theatre that tackle life in the modern world.
For this production theyve recruited three theatre artists: Joy Fairfield, returning Nebunele collaborator and acclaimed Seattle fringe theatre director (Love Person, Patty Red Pants, The Secret Ruths of Island House); Beth Hersh, innovative Seattle designer (Love Person, Mercy Ride, Ms. Klein); and Brynna Jourden, fight choreographer extraordinaire and returning Nebunele actor (Not All Clowns Are Bozos, memory war theatre project, Medea Knows Best) to join Nebunele company members Claytie Mason, Alissa Mortenson and Chris Scofield on this journey through the private faith of three very different women. Cussing at the Moon is the result of a collaborative development process that emphasizes structure as well as the magic of ensemble scenework.
