SOLD OUT! Tour: Mariners Medical Arts Complex Rehabilitation of an Iconic Structure
Mariners Medical Arts was designed by notable mid-century, master architect, Richard Neutra and completed in 1963.  Having witnessed firsthand the deterioration of the property over several years, Burnham-Ward Properties acquired the property in 2021 in order to ensure the responsible stewardship of this iconic asset. Burnham-Ward Properties enlisted architects Shubin Donaldson for the complicated rehabilitation of the property to its original mid-century design, including passive energy controls, site amenities, and color palette. The building embodies special architectural and mid-century modern design features that integrate interior and exterior spaces to form a setting conducive to medical treatment.  Modern updates include site accessibility utilizing the historic renovation code and Cal Green code features.

The tour will explain how to incorporate California Historic codes into renovation projects. These codes differ from CBC and IBC codes. The tour will also review passive energy techniques, both from the original design as well as modern upgrades and how Cal Green codes were incorporated into the rehabilitation of the complex.

Learning Objectives:
Attendees will learn how to implement ADA/Accessibility features in historic projects and understand what is exempt based on the California Historic Building Code.
Attendees will learn about the sustainability features incorporated into the original Neutra design, such as passive vertical operable louvers, overhangs to reduce heat gain, and landscape watering features to reduce usage.
Attendees will learn how Cal Green codes were implemented into the renovation without impacting the historic mid-century design.
Attendees will learn how Richard Neutra created a design that still complies with todays healthy environments for its patrons.
