Hexham Orpheus Choir will be performing Puccini 'Messa di Gloria' and Holst 'The Planets' in Hexham Abbey on Friday, 3rd November. This concert is part of the 'Museum of the Moon'.
The 'Museum of the Moon' (https://my-moon.org) is a magnificent touring artwork by UK artist, Luke Jerram. It has already been to locations all over the World and from 29 September - 11 November it will be in Hexham Abbey! Measuring seven metres in diameter, the moon features 120dpi details NASA imagery of the lunar surface and will be suspended in the crossing over the singers and musicians in the concert.
Puccini: Messa di Gloria This was an early work composed by Puccini as his graduation exercise, and it had its first performance in Lucca in July 1880. The musical style is direct and unashamedly operatic as one might expect, and clearly influenced by his hero, Verdi.
Holst: The Planets Suite This performance of the Planets Suite by Gustav Holst, as arranged by George Morton, has been selected to compliment the extraordinary space and acoustic of Hexham Abbey.
The Orchestra of the Moon The Orchestra of the Moon has been specially curated for this event, comprising professional musicians from across the region, conducted by Mark Edwards.
