CFF: DER TODESKING (1989)
Video Pirates presents Cinedelphia Film Festival April 10-27, 2014
Monday, April 21, 8:00 PM DER TODESKING (1989, 75 minutes, Dir. Jorg Buttgereit) 25th Anniversary Screening Presented by Matt Garrett $10, no refunds or exchanges.
Following his notorious feature debut, NEKROMANTIK, German auteur Jörg Buttgereit returned in 1989 with DER TODESKING, a comparatively restrained meditation on suicide and our collective obsession with the destruction of our fellow man. Presented as a series of seven thematically related vignettes, each designated by a day of the week, we follow various nameless, disparate characters as they each take steps towards leaving this mortal coil.
Eschewing the aid of traditional story structure, or even a central protagonist, DER TODESKING boldly invites the viewer to witness the demise of these characters in an unflinching manner reminiscent of Alan Clarke's infamous BBC short, "Elephant", broadcast that same year. Despite being eclipsed by the unbridled gore and depravity of Buttgereit's other features, DER TODESKING is nonetheless a shocking, thoughtful, and anarchic film that, in some ways, may be the most accessible film in the director's filmography. (MG)
