Wide Angle Lunches - The Honorable William E. Kennard - "Echoes Across the Pond: Europe's Immigration Crisis, the American Civil Rights Movement and Ukraine"
Few Americans have the perspective on Europe and the turmoil in Ukraine that Bill Kennard does: from 2009 to 2013 he had unique access on the Continent as the United States' Ambassador to the European Union. In Brussels Ambassador Kennard worked actively to promote transatlantic trade and investment and to eliminate regulatory barriers to commerce, and he was a key force behind President Obama's decision in February 2013 to launch negotiations on the ambitious Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, which aims to expand trade and investment across the Atlantic.
Before serving in the Obama Administration, Ambassador Kennard spent nine years as a Managing Director of The Carlyle Group and four years as Chairman of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission. A graduate of Stanford and Yale Law School and the recipient of several honorary degrees, Ambassador Kennard today serves as a Senior Advisor to Grain Management LLC, a private equity firm specializing in the communications sector, and is on the board of directors of MetLife and Duke Energy. Ambassador Kennard recently moved to Charleston with his wife, Deborah Diane Kennedy, and their son Robert.
