Ry Cavanagh and Jennifer Kimball - and friends
Get ready for a very special evening with two of our favorite artists, Jennifer Kimball and Ry Cavanaugh, along with friends Jenna Moynihan on fiddle and Rich Hinman on electric guitar.
Jennifer Kimballs inventive harmony singing re-defined duet singing for her generation and continues to influence young artists today. Listen to The Story, Wayfaring Strangers, Wintery Songs (In Eleventy Part Harmony), or dozens of albums featuring her vocals (John Gorka, Patty Larkin, Rose Polenzani, David Wilcox) to hear her gorgeous and sophisticated harmony singing.
She is also a habitual and talented songwriter, with several albums of her own including her most recent, Avocet (2017).
The most impressive attribute of the album, [Veering from the Wave, 1998] however, is the way in which she weaves together the threads of many musical traditions including early American folk songs, folk-rock, the Beatles, jazz, even a hit of klezmer to create an emotionally powerful and coherent chronicle of the loss and recovery of love in her life. This is not an album full of self-pitying dirges and laments. Kimball shows many sides and in doing so demonstrates a versatility with her music, voice and lyrics that is rare.

Ry Cavanaugh has produced, co-produced, performed on and written songs for 9 records by Session Americana, a band he co-founded and continues to perform with as they tour the USA and Europe. His song Lighthouse Light has been covered by many artists including Mary Black and Janis Ian. In April 2020 Ry released his new album Time for This, which includes stark, intimate renditions of songs his father wrote in the 70s.
Honest, stark, intimate and open, listening takes you back to the time when names like Tim Hardin, Bob Lind, Eric Anderson, the young Paul Simon and Walker were singing in the coffee bars to mesmerised audiences discovering the birth of a new folk boom. Its a wonderful place to revisit and, honouring the memory of his father, George Cavanaugh, makes a perfect guide.
