Musical Performance with Gaida
Gaida and her band will present a tribute to the hopes, souls, hearts of the Syrian People, as they dream of the light and demonstrate to the world their resilience and bravery.

Syrian songstress, Gaida, is one of the most "effusive and charming vocalists in the New York world music scene." Along with her outstanding ensemble - oudist Zafer Tawil, pianist George Dulin, bassist Jennifer Vincent,percussionist Tony DeVivo, and special guest Kinan Azmeh on clarinet - Gaida performs "entrancing" innovative interpretations of Syrian folk songs, originals, and freestyle improvisations over Arabic and Latin grooves.



About the Artists

Vocalist and songwriter, Gaida, is celebrated for her impeccable musical intuition and velvety yet crystalline voice. The wide range of musical styles heard within her music flow together organically and naturally; tied together by Gaida's depth of soul and her evocative and expressive voice, which transcends genre and drives directly into the listener's heart. Gaida and her band were featured in major films, including Jonathan Demme's 2008 drama "Rachel Getting Married." They recorded with Robyn Hitchcock, Gillian Welch and Alejandro Escovedo and performed in prestigious national venues like the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall and many world music festivals. Jennifer Vincent, bassist and a cellist, has been as active force on the jazz and latin scenes in NYC for the past two decades. She plays, tours, and records (and has played) with the likes of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Betty Carter, Abbey Lincoln, and the Harry Whiteaker Group, Jon Hendricks, Paula West, Son Sublime and the famed Boy's Choir of Harlem. She studied at the New School with the legends Ron Carter, ouster Williams, and Andy Gonzales. In 2001, she studied with Orlando Cachaito Lopez, the bassist of the beloved Buena Vista Social Club. Her bass lines are featured on NBC's 75th Anniversary "Cosby Show Retrospective" and on episodes of Dora the Explorer and Dirty Sexy Money. Jennifer co-leads two groups: The New Jazz Quartet and CoCoMaMa. For the past 7 years she held the bass chair for the Duke Ellington Orchestra, the most legendary band in American history. Pianist/Composer George Dulin has been making heads turn and ears percolate since his arrival on the New York jazz scene. In January 2006, George finished a Masters in Jazz Performance at New York University, where he was an adjunct professor of Jazz Piano. He has studied with Jim McNeely, Kenny Werner, George Garzone, Brian Lynch, Chris Potter, Dafnis Prieto, Justin DelloJoio, and Panos Mavromatis. He has performed in a master class with living legend Cecil Taylor, and recorded with Teo Macero, John Scofield, Lenny Pickett, and Alex Sipiagin. Since 2002, George has gigged extensively,performing at major venues such as Jazz at Lincoln Center, Dizzy's Club Coca-cola, Birdland, 55 Bar, Smalls, Cornelia Street Cafe, Joe's Pub and The Blue Note.

New York based Palestinian-American Zafer Tawil is a master of Arabic music with virtuoso talents on oud, violin, qanun and a full range of percussion instruments. He has performed with numerous musicians ranging from pop star Sting to Arab music greats such as Simone Shaheen, Chab Mami, and Bassam Saba to avant-garde composer/performer Elliot Sharpe, among others. Zafer has composed music for a number of films including the Oscar- nominated Jonathan Demme film Rachel Getting Married.

Tony De Vivo is a drummer, percussionist, composer & arranger from Caracas, Venezuela, where he started working professionally as a musician by the age of 16. Based in NY since 1991, he earned his BFA from The New School's Jazz and Contemporary Music Department, and an MA from Queens College. De Vivo has toured South America, West Africa, Europe, Russia, China. With The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the U.S. Department of State, Tony participated in the "Jazz Ambassadors" program as a band leader (JazzSabroson Quartet), touring South America (2003) and West Africa (2006). Tony directs his own large ensemble, Winds of Wood Ensemble (WW Ensemble) and also performs nationally and internationally with flamenco group Espiritu Gitano, "Arturo Martinez", Pedro Giraudo Jazz Orquestra, The Cintron brothers, Gary Morgan's big band Panamericana, Syrian singer Gaida and Pablo Moya's YUKA SEKA. www.myspace.com/tonydevivo
