Positive Disruption: Community Development from the Inside Out
Town Hall Seattle
Seattle, WA
Share this event:

In 1991, Molly Melching founded the NGO Tostan which developed a holistic human rights-based nonformal education program for women that has been implemented in hundreds of rural communities in 8 African countries.  Meeting 3 times weekly for 3 years, program participants learn about health, finances, leadership and human rights, and find a safe place to begin discussing deeper personal and social issues. They themselves are taking what they learned and applying it to transform their communities, for example, bringing an end to centuries-old harmful practices, such as female genital cutting and child marriage in over 7000 villages.

Molly Melching will discuss the ways deep listening has played a critical role in Tostan's success, transforming their communities through values deliberations anchored in human rights to bring about positive change.  Ms. Melching will address how listening to the voices of the people helped Tostan put in place structures that sustain the changes made by the people themselves.
