Last three Wednesdays in July, from 6:308pm
(July 12, 19, 26)

As part of our ongoing efforts to make educational opportunities as accessible as possible for our community, Film Analysis Seminar will be free.

There will be 12 spots available, on a first-come, first-served basis. If one month of the seminar fills up, just email Han Ha (han@nwfilmforum.org) to be added to a waitlist for the following month. Each month focuses on a different director or film topic, and registration for each months topic is separate.

Please note that if you confirm your participation, make sure that you can attend at least three of the four meetings for that month.

Public safety notice:

NWFF patrons will be required to wear masks that cover both nose and mouth while in the building. Disposable masks are available at the door for those who need them. We are not currently checking vaccination cards. Recent variants of COVID-19 readily infect and spread between individuals regardless of vaccination status.

NWFF is adapting to evolving recommendations to protect the public from COVID-19. Read more about their policies regarding cleaning, masks, and capacity limitations at bit.ly/nwffcovidsafety

About the seminar:

Film Analysis Seminar is a four-week-per-topic free program hosted by Northwest Film Forum that provides participants with a chance to dive deeper into films on a philosophical and critical level. In this class, students will discuss carefully curated films using the Socratic Method, which is a form of learning based on asking and answering questions. Through ongoing conversation, the program hopes to nurture art appreciation as well as communities of movie lovers.

This July, well dive into the work of Elaine May, who stretched the definition of comedy to its breaking point across her (woefully short) four-film career. Perhaps best known as the first victim of directors jail for Ishtar, Mays films were cited in their day for their difficult productions and budgetary overruns. Yet she also produced four hilariously incisive films focusing on the messy, co-dependent nature of relationships in the modern age. Defined by her strong scripts, elastic directing style, and unflinching camera, her films have gone on to influence the likes of The Safdie Brothers, Jay & Mark Duplass, and Patton Oswalt, among many others. We will be watching three of her four films: The Heartbreak Kid (1972), Mikey and Nicky (1976), and Ishtar (1987).

The nice thing is to make an audience laugh and laugh and laugh and shudder later.  Elaine May

Accessibility

Ticketing, concessions, cinemas, restrooms, and our public edit lab are located on Northwest Film Forum's ground floor, which is wheelchair accessible. We have a limited number of assistive listening devices available for programs hosted in our larger theater, Cinema 1. These devices are maintained by the Technical Director, and can be requested at the ticketing and concessions counter. The Forum does NOT have assistive devices for the visually impaired, and is not (yet) a scent-free venue. Our commitment to increasing access for our audiences is ongoing, and we welcome all public input on the subject! If you have additional specific questions about accessibility at our venue, please contact our Patron Services Manager at maria@nwfilmforum.org
