New Orleans Empty Bowl Project
Enjoy an afternoon of music, bowling, and 300 unique, hand-made bowls created by the region's potters. The New Orleans Empty Bowl Project benefit, hosted by New Orleans Artists Against Hunger and Homelessness (NOAAHH), from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 11 at Rock-n-Bowl, 3000 South Carrollton Avenue.
Admission is $30 and includes a complimentary bowl and bowling. Performing will be The Hot 8 Brass Band, recent Grammy nominees and featured in the HBO series. There will be a cash bar and food provided by Kajun Kettle and Southern Hospitality.
A silent auction will feature bowls glazed and signed by guest artists, including NOAAHH co-founder Allen Toussaint who will attend the benefit. Earth and Fire Studio in New Orleans was instrumental in coordinating potters from the region who have donated the 300 bowls for the May 11 benefit.
Tickets can be purchased via the NOAAHH website, www.noaahh.org or at the door. The first 300 ticket buyers will receive a complimentary bowl, designed and signed by the contributing potters. Event proceeds will go toward NOAAHH's grants that are distributed by NOAAHH to the region's philanthropic, nonprofit agencies and charities that are experienced in providing food and shelter to the needy.
NOAAHH was founded in 1985 by Allen Toussaint and Aaron Neville who brought together a group of New Orleans musicians for the purpose of performing a concert to benefit the hungry and homeless of metro New Orleans. To date NOAAHH has distributed more than $1 million in grants to 50 plus area organizations.
Empty Bowls, an international grassroots effort to fight hunger, was created by The Imagine Render Group. Potters collaborate with the community for events that address hunger issues. The empty bowl is a reminder of all of the empty bowls in the world.
One out of eight Americans struggle with food insecurity. The Food Research and Action Center reports the New Orleans metro area has the eighth-highest rate of food hardship in the nation. Food hardship is defined as the lack of money to buy food that families need and is considerably worse for households with children. An estimated 17,000 to 19,000 men, women and children in the New Orleans area are homeless.
