TICKETS STILL AVAILABLE AT THE DOOR $25 (cash only)
Art House Productions presents, a _gaia production of "A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant & A Prayer" as part of the worldwide campaign to end violence against women and girls.
V-Day Jersey City 2009 is proud to once again to join the global effort to raise money and awareness for local organizations that work to stop violence against women and girls. A MEMORY, A MONOLOGUE, A RANT & A PRAYER: Writings To Stop Violence Against Women and Girls, is a groundbreaking collection of monologues by world-renowned authors and playwrights, edited by Eve Ensler and Mollie Doyle. These diverse voices rise up in a collective roar to break open, expose, and examine the insidiousness of violence at all levels: brutality, neglect, a punch, even a put-down. These writings are inspired, funny, angry, heartfelt, tragic, and beautiful. But above all, together they create a true and profound portrait of how violence against women affects every one of us.
This year, marks a very special year for_gaia as we are celebrating 6 years of ending violence towards women and girls in New Jersey, New York City and beyond.
Join us this year on April 4th for two performances at 3pm (doors open at 2:30pm) & 8pm (doors open at 7:30pm) at Art House Productions, 1 McWilliams Place in Jersey City, New Jersey (SE Corner of Hamilton Park, near Erie/8th St).
In 2008, over 4,000 V-Day benefit events took place produced by volunteer activists in the U.S. and around the world, educating millions of people about the reality of violence against women and girls Since 1998, V-Day and these highly successful events have raised over $60 million for local beneficiaries working to end violence against women and girls. The V-Day Jersey City 2009 campaign is being produced by _gaia - a collection of women artists that work to actively support the creativity of local women. Proceeds will benefit WomenRising of Hudson County. Governed and managed by women, WomenRising assists women and their families to achieve self sufficiency and live safe, fulfilling and productive lives, through social services, economic development and advocacy services.
In addition to benefiting local anti-violence groups, ten percent proceeds will go to this years V-Day international spotlight theme, V-Days 2009 Spotlight Campaign focuses on THE WOMEN OF THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO.
A diverse cast will perform a variety of monologues which describes a portrait of how violence against women affects every one of us. This event will also feature art work by Wahala Temi. Wahalas mixed media work consistently chronicles the lives of African women who are victims of female genital mutilation (FGM). Her work also delves into other contemporary socio-political and cultural issues in both Nigeria and the United States.
Join us and change the story of women!
