Starting on the Path to Building Decarbonization
The course will introduce carbon and its impact on climate change and the relationship between energy reduction and carbon reduction. Several decarbonization strategies will be discussed. The course will conclude with an overview of the Inflation Reduction Act provisions on energy conservation and its potential impact on projects.
Learning Objectives:
Attendees will learn why building decarbonization is essential to combating climate change and in creating healthier environments for the building inhabitants. Attendees will analyze project planning goals/strategies at the initial stages of design and their importance on the path to decarbonization to create healthier environments for building inhabitants. Attendees will learn about the energy provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, and its impact on creating healthier environments for building inhabitants in project design. Attendees will discuss how to consider equity and social justice issues for building inhabitants when setting on the path to decarbonization within project design.

Presenter:
Ganesh Nayak, AIA, NOMA, LEED, GGP is a principal at Metier Inc, in Atlanta, GA consulting on sustainable design and accessibility. He has over twenty-five years of experience in a variety of project types. As a sustainability expert, he has been directly involved in the LEED certification for major projects totaling over five million square feet and was awarded the US Army Corps of Engineers Charles Trainor team award for excellence. Ganesh holds a Master of Architecture degree from Kansas State University. He has published, taught, and presented extensively on architecture, sustainability, and disability. He was a founder-editor of 34 AR, the design magazine of AIA Kansas. He is an ICC-certified accessibility specialist and plans examiner. He serves on the Code Development Committee of the International Green Construction Code (IgCC).
Presently Ganesh serves on the National AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE) Leadership Group, where he co-chairs the Climate Action-Climate Justice subcommittee. Hes also secretary on the AIA Georgia board and is past chair of AIA Atlantas COTE. He was chair of the Georgia Department of Educations State Advisory Panel for Special Education and has also served on the Kansas Governors Council for Developmental Disabilities as parent.
