Music for a summer evening
The English Chamber Choir returns to St Marys Church to present an eclectic sequence of music from Bach to Bernstein. The first half of the programme will be a selection of motets and anthems by classical composers, starting with Bachs joyful Lobet den Herrn, and progressing through Bruckner, Rachmaninov and Stanford, to more recent items by John Tavener and James MacMillan. It will also feature two short pieces by the Ukrainian composer Mikola Leontovych, who is chiefly known for his Carol of the Bells. After a short pause, there will be a change of mood with a sequence of music from stage and screen, including close-harmony arrangements, barbershop and some solos and duets.
Composers include Gershwin, Noel Coward and Leonard Bernstein, while there are many popular items better-known by their titles than the names of their composers.
After the performance, the singers will be moving to the Glebe Garden to enjoy a post-concert picnic, and all our audience are invited to join us. Please bring your own food, wine, rugs, etc (and possibly the odd umbrella). We look forward to seeing you.
