MR. MIKE'S MONDO VIDEO (1979)
35th Anniversary Screening
$10, no refunds or exchanges.

The brainchild of Saturday Night Live writer/featured player Michael O'Donoghue, MR. MIKE'S MONDO VIDEO is a wild parody of the original shock reality doc MONDO CANE (1962) and the countless number of sequels and imitators that it spawned.  Originally intended to be an NBC television special but canceled due to its racy content, MR. MIKE features an endless parade of celebrities participating in oddball skits:  Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Jane Curtin, Gilda Radner, Carrie Fisher, Margot Kidder, Debbie Harry, the list goes on and on.  Klaus Nomi sings an aria, Sid Vicious performs his infamous cover of "My Way", and Mr. Mike adds lyrics to The Tornados' "Telstar", which acts as the film's theme song.  A wild, fractured time reminiscent of KENTUCKY FRIED MOVIE and AMAZON WOMEN ON THE MOON.

Michael O'Donoghue's dark sense of humor and counterculture leanings led to a truly varied career in show business.  His genre-heavy parody comic book "The Adventures of Phoebe Zeit-Geist" (1965) was cited by Garry Trudeau as a major inspiration on his work.  From there he went on to co-write the script for the Merchant Ivory film SAVAGES and then went on to become one of the founding writers of National Lampoon magazine, for which he later acted as editor.  Lorne Michaels selected O'Donoghue to be the head writer on Saturday Night Live and he actually appeared in the first episode's very first sketch alongside John Belushi.  His post-SNL work included a hit country song (Dolly Parton's "Single Women"), a role in WALL STREET (1987), and co-writer of SCROOGED (1988).  Michael O'Donoghue passed away in 1994 at the age of 54.
