Full Moon Story Slam - Celebrating Pride Month
Full Moon Story Slam is our chance to gather as friends and share true stories from our lives. Simply put, a story slam is a competition based on the art of storytelling. It puts a dual emphasis on content and performance, encouraging storytellers to focus on what they're saying and how they're saying it. It is an exercise in crafting stories within a set time limit and it is great entertainment! Story slammers will tell a 5-minute short story based on the evening's theme: Pronouns.
If you know that you would like to tell a story, you can let us know by email at info@newburyportacting.org up until noon on June 3rd. If you are not sure yet, you will have the opportunity to sign up during the event. Criteria for judging: The story has an arc: a beginning, a point of change, and a resolution. Presentation of the story. Time (no longer than five minutes) and connection to the theme.
Please remember, the story must be true. The story must be yours. And you may not use props, notes or a written script.
The Actors Studio of Newburyport, will join in Newburyport's PRIDE parade during the day, and that evening we will host our Full Moon Story Slam. In honor of PRIDE Month, our theme for the night is pronouns. Pronouns is a labeling shorthand for a persons preferences regarding gender identity (he/him; she/her; they/them).
A simple grammatical term, pronouns currently possess a new dynamism in our contemporary social lexicon. As our culture opens to deeper understanding of gender fluid versus sexual identity, more accurate language becomes necessary. With any change, humans experience tension, confusion, good intentions, awkward moments, and, hopefully, a more inclusive environment. Come share your personal story of encountering this wave of expanding awareness and sensitivity.
