CFF: TRIPPY KIDDIE DOUBLE-FEATURE featuring FUN IN BALLOONLAND
Video Pirates presents Cinedelphia Film Festival April 10-27, 2014
Saturday, April 12, 7:30 PM Trippy Kiddie Double Feature: FUN IN BALLOONLAND (1965, 52 minutes) + THE SECRET OF MAGIC ISLAND (1957, 63 minutes) $10, no refunds or exchanges.
Something Weird Video discovered what is perhaps the most inexplicable film ever shot in Philadelphia, 1965's FUN IN BALLOONLAND. Presented by "Giant Balloon Parades, Inc.", the film starts out as K. Gordon Murray-like kidfare with a little boy wandering through a fantasy warehouse filled with giant inanimate balloon characters, but then it suddenly turns into the 45th Annual Gimbels Thanksgiving Day Parade shot with a single camera positioned in front of the Franklin Institute. This part is narrated by a female improv who wasn't given nearly enough direction and eventually just starts saying crazy things. And then it all ends back in Balloonland with an audience participation sequence, all attendees are required to join in.
So basically it's like a bunch of Gimbels employees got high and decided to shoot a film on Thanksgiving Eve. The only existing canister for this film is unmarked and it has no credits so this unlisted-on-IMDb oddity is a real mystery. A treat for both kids and connoisseurs of the strange. THE SECRET OF MAGIC ISLAND: Come celebrate the 50th anniversary of the domestic release of one of the strangest, rarest, and most extraordinary children's films ever made! Starring a cast of real-life animals placed in domestic situations (ducks drive cars! dogs paint pictures!), this French oddity is a real treat for all ages. As the trailer proclaims, "The most exciting, wondrously wonderful children's motion picture ever made!" And definitely one of the strangest. NOTE: Screened in Swedish with English subtitles.
Doors at 7:00, Program at 7:30.
