Carmen de la Calle: A New Latino Musical
Set in 1989 San Antonio and the present, this theatrical adaptation of Georges Bizet's classic opera dives deeply into the themes of passion and envy in portraying the lives and struggles of the marginalized and working classes of South Texas.
The musical is written by nationally recognized poet and performer Amalia Ortiz and accompanied by the San Antonio musical group Los Nahuatlatos. Carmen de la Calle highlights the hybrid nature of Tex-Mex culture by incorporating the melodrama of novelas (Mexican soap operas), spoken word, and bilingualism with the musical confluence of Mexican standards, modern Tejano, Hip-Hop and the music of 1989 pop culture.
