The Shadows Took Shape: Decoded
From global warming and world-wide rebellion to rogue contagions and hadron colliders, some believe we are living in the Age of Apocalypse. What does the apocalyptic look like through the mythic lens of afrofuturism? Can emergent symbols and patterns in cultural consciousness mark the path of our collective destiny? How do art and image shape reality?
Li Sumpter, art educator and PhD Candidate in Mythology and Depth Psychology, offers a unique reading of select works from The Shadows Took Shape that illuminates visual cues and symbolic codes of a new apocalyptic vernacular. Sumpter's dissertation identifies the archetypal aesthetics and apocalyptic lexicon found embedded in the images of today's visual landscape. Guest gurus of culture Greg Tate and Danny Simmons are invited to join Sumpter in a group exercise of coding and decoding exhibition art and pop culture iconography in search of patterns that connect.
Are you a fan of sci-fi film? Do you love glyphs and cracking codes? Please join us for an afro- nerdy afternoon of The Shadows Took Shape: Decoded. Decoder ring not required.
