About (Nagisa Oshima, United Kingdom, 1983, 123 min, in English & Japanese with English subtitles)
We begin our Ryuichi Sakamoto triple-tribute with what may be his most iconic screen work among many: Nagisa Oshimas Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence. For his first major film score, Sakamoto composed a score as rich and heartfelt as Oshimas film itself, culminating in the legendary title track. His work didnt stop there, however on camera, he gives a nuanced performance as a commander whose stoic principles and dedication to tradition is challenged by the arrival of a British POW, the singularly cinematic figure of David Bowie. Mr. Lawrence marked a stunning beginning to a new chapter of Sakamotos career, which would have a quiet but profound influence on cinema.

Accessibility
Ticketing, concessions, cinemas, restrooms, and our public edit lab are located on Northwest Film Forum's ground floor, which is wheelchair accessible. We have a limited number of assistive listening devices available for programs hosted in our larger theater, Cinema 1. These devices are maintained by the Technical Director, and can be requested at the ticketing and concessions counter.
The Forum does NOT have assistive devices for the visually impaired, and is not (yet) a scent-free venue. Our commitment to increasing access for our audiences is ongoing, and we welcome all public input on the subject!
If you have additional specific questions about accessibility at our venue, please contact our Patron Services Manager at maria@nwfilmforum.org
