Voicing Your Body with Rafael Lopez-Barrantes

Your voice and your body are uniquely yours. They express "you" as you are. Yet in daily life the body and voice often remain a well of expressiveness rarely tapped. Contacting that well, engaging your body and voice together, opens the potential for whole other "yous" to be expressed. Professionally, this extends the range of styles and roles you are capable of executing. Personally, contact with new versions of your individual voice and body allows for transformation of your daily self.
Based on the extended vocal range techniques of the Roy Hart Theatre of France, this class is designed to: - Strengthen, free and develop the vocal range of the performer - Establish the voice's connection with its source, the body - Personify the voice through gesture and movement - Address the interdisciplinary vocal demands currently placed on the performer
The class begins with the voice of each individual just "as it is"; therefore, no previous vocal training is necessary. Exploring individually and as a group, participants will contact the sources of energy hidden deep within the body that fuel and (re)ignite the voice. Through breathing and body conditioning exercises we will approach sound, text and/or song in order to discover one's own expressiveness. This exploration will be aided by movement and gesture work that evokes the world of physical and dance-theatre.
