Home may be where the heart is, but it can be a dangerous place for older adults.

Falls are the primary cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries for older Americans, affecting thousands of people 65 and older.  Over one-third of people fall, resulting in serious injuries like broken bones and traumatic brain injuries.  In addition, as we age, our bones become weaker and brittle, making us more likely to break a bone.  Every year, one in four older adults in the US fall and 20% of those falls result in significant injury that can trigger a descending spiral of dependence.

In this course, we will examine personal risk factors and discuss how small changes can keep you protected from falls. This course will focus on two main areas of fall prevention- physical abilities and home safety:

Physical abilities- learn simple balance techniques and strength exercises to keep you on your feet!

Home safety- we will discuss small changes you can make in and around your home to keep you safe

Join us so that you can learn to identify some common home hazards and about some dangers many people dont recognize - like medication management, isolation, and inadvertent misuse of prescribed and over-the-counter medications, supplements and alcohol.  All of these factors can affect a persons ability to live independently.

You will learn what you can do to reduce your chances of falling.
