"Can we ever truly ESCAPE?"
Statement: J. Morrison proposes an escape from city life, and asks the question, "Is New York a prison?" Desiring to create a retreat from the norm, the artist invites your presence to accompany him on a new exploration. Continuing thematically with the series, this work introduces new elements to form a site-specific story. Theatrical, provocative, and mysterious, the work pays homage to the likes of Sleep No More, David Lynch's the Black Lodge, and John Carpenter's film of the same title. Incorporating themes of fantasy vs reality, removal and escapism, lightness and darkness, loss and hope, the artist creates an interactive journey towards escapism.
Bio: J. Morrison is a multidisciplinary Brooklyn-based artist and the creator of the visual art project HOMOCATS. The artist's performances have been noted for their spirit of playfulness, generosity, and mystique. Using intimacy and humor, he plays with issues of identity in an open-ended manner, often inviting the audience to observe or participate. His independent performance project "SPACE IS THE PLACE" has presented over 35 shows. His work is exhibited widely in NY and internationally.
