Artist Bios: Rumen Shopov hails from Gotse Delchev, a crossroads town in southwest Bulgaria neighboring the borders of Greece and Macedonia. A master of the tambura (long necked mandolin), bouzouki, and an accomplished drummer and vocalist, Shopov was concertmaster of the Nevrokopski Folk Ensemble, Bulgaria's first national folk ensemble, for more than 20 years. He was also lead member of two of the Pirin region's hottest bands: Shturo Make and Orkestar Orbita. In 2002, he toured across America with the Kolev Family Ensemble. His music captures and showcases the sparkling fretwork, incendiary rhythms, and expressive soul of his native Bulgarian/Turkish-Romani musical tradition. Shopov has been artistic consultant to three previous VOR-International Roma Day celebrations.
Peter Jaques (clarinet, trumpet) has been a fixture of the Bay Area Balkan and Near Eastern music scene since 1995. His playing style combines traditional Balkan Rom, Turkish and Greek idioms with his own, deeply soulful approach. He directs Brass Menazeri and plays with Gamelan X, the Balinese-hybrid processional orchestra directed by Eric Oberthaler.
Dan Cantrell (composer) began composing at age 11. Since that time he has continued performing and writing music of all kinds featuring his main instruments, the accordion, piano and musical saw. In recent years his attention has been focused on the study of music from Eastern Europe as well as composing for film, dance, and theatre. He has composed music for over thirty films, several plays, a variety of dance groups and pieces as well as other eclectic performances and events. In recent years, Dan received an Emmy award as well as the Golden Gate award for his work on documentary films. He also recently had the honor of recording with one of his personal musical heroes Tom Waits.
