Over the years the performances have ranged from tender and thoughtful to eerie and emotional, from fluid partnering and graceful leaps to furious rolls to the floor and fierce, bounding jumps. The BOOST dance festival has always delivered a diverse, entertaining and successful performances. The festival premiered in 2010 selling out a full weekend of shows at the Erickson Theater in Capitol Hill. In year one the festival featured seven Seattle artists and 76 performers.
Following the success in 2010, the BOOST dance festival returned in 2011, bigger and bolder. In it's second year BOOST dance festival doubled in size playing host to a total of eight local choreographers presenting their works over the course of two weekends. The 2011 artists were selected by a jaw-dropping panel of adjudicators from across the United States: Seattle, New York, San Francisco, and Detroit. Once again, the house was packed throughout the run of the festival.
In order to further cultivate the mission of the festival, BOOST producer, Marlo Martin made 2011 a year of development and growth. 2011 added perks for all applicants and selected artists. BOOST's mission has grown to include transparency in the sections process, submission process with local and out-of-state artists, a chance to network through the submission process with local and out-of-state artists, as well as more performance and teaching opportunities for the selected applicants.
One applicant shared, "It was great to hear the panel's take on my movement and written explanation. I realized how little communication there is of that sort in the festivals today. It's especially interesting when you don't have a personal relationship with the artist on the panel. Interpreting their opinions without solid feedback is difficult. Reviewers have their place, artists see from the inside out."
Once again, growing upon the sold out successes 2012 brought about the addition of the Guest Artist Series. BOOST accepted two out of state artists to further support the development of its artists as it continues to cultivate new relationships and hopefully, future collaborations. And in 2013 BOOST welcomed new co-director, Kristen Legg.
As it emerges as a fixture for Seattle dancers, choreographers, and audiences alike, the BOOST dance festival will strengthen its commitment to produce a highly engaging, diverse, and eclectic show for many years to come. Together Martin and Legg will continue to uphold the vision of the BOOST dance festival and are dedicated to producing the best year yet!
2014 marks the BOOST dance festival's fifth year celebrating and presenting northwest dance artists. This year BOOST will take over The Erickson Theater for an exciting two weekend run April 4-5 and 11-12, 2014. Each year BOOST has continued to develop and grow and this year is no exception!
This year we will welcome back some favorite BOOST Artists from the past four years and will accept an additional 3-5 northwest artists via application.
2014 will also usher in a new program within the festival, BOOSTmeUP! A program specifically designed to offer young dancers and groups of a pre-professional level the opportunity to perform in a professionally produced festival alongside their peers. BOOSTmeUP! is virtually a mini-BOOST for aspiring young dancers and their directors. BOOST producer, Marlo Martin, asks "Why wait until adulthood to begin the development of community in the Seattle dance community? Why not create a bridge between the many wonderful schools, studios, and conservatories in Seattle? We can begin by educating our young dancers on the importance of community and offering them the experience of learning from a diverse set of teachers, choreographers, and fellow dancers". BOOSTmeUP! dancers will perform in two matinees and will be invited to an open dress/preview for the professional division of the BOOST dance festival.
Come celebrate five years of presenting exciting, fresh, and diverse contemporary dance at the 2014 BOOST dance festival.
