Astra
Los Angeles, CA - April 2009- Candice Cross as Astra and Alec Marken as Dion star in Jamie Caufields and Hanna Halls presentation of Astra von Berlifitzing, an adventurous dance-theater melding of retro-feudal and edgy-Goth dance theater that mates the lush and menacing music of the acclaimed young composer Regan Remy to the manically imaginative, macabre and chilling fantasies of librettist David Wilkinsons original text.
Fire is the theme that illuminates the highly original score in the dark universe of Astra von Berlifitzing, whose hero, too stubborn to die, and heroine, too furious to stay dead, maintain their immutable pride and relentless purpose from the age of Regency gowns and lovely harmonies to the era of tattoos, piercings, and aggressive musical dissonances. Inspired by the eerie themes and settings of Edgar Allan Poes grim tales Metzengerstein and Ligeia, this haunting presentation of Astra features Janet Hueys, Candice Crosss and A.C. Markens choreography, as music and movement evolve with the centuries-spanning drama from minuets and waltzes to burlesque, modern and goth stylings, reflecting the swiftly-changing moods of elegance, love, joy, triumph, despair, gloom, hope, horror and redemption. The searing passions of the lead dancers, and their movement that mutates from elegant to bold, from gentle to fierce and horrific, are afforded support and diversion by provocative cameo performances from the powerfully individual dancers Chisa Yamaguchi, Janet Huey, Jiffy Reed, Bex Stoner, Camille Calvin, Sarah Al Nour, as well as from two talented ensembles respectively representing the dancing publics of the 19th and the 21st centuries. Astra von Berlifitzing challenges our views of death and immortality, as heroine and hero travel toward their tragic and redemptive destiny, meeting in love, parting in scorn, and meeting once again and forever, in a blazing and thoroughly enigmatic finale.
The Astra Dance Company provide performances of the Gothic original waltz-ballet "Astra von Berlifitzing" to schools and corporate events. Partial performances may be 15-40 minutes; full performances run 1 hour. Indoor and outdoor versions are available; outdoor performances can use live fire and firedancers. The Astra Dance Company also offer solo and couple performances of dances from "Astra von Berlifitzing, " from antique (minuet), through classic (waltz, Viennese waltz, ballet), to contemporary (belly, scarf, burlesque). Lessons can accompany these performances.
