The beloved Requiem by Parisian composer Gabriel Fauré will be the featured composition on the Heritage Chorale's Spring Concert. The soulful melodies and sumptuous harmonies of this elegant work have made it a favorite of choruses and audiences for many decades. The Requiem will be heard in its original version, scored predominantly for organ, with a chamber ensemble of strings, French horns, and harp.
The organ figures prominently in the other major work on this program, the Messe Solennelle (Solemn Mass) by Jean Langlais. Despite the fact that Langlais became blind when he was two years old, he was one of the most brilliant Parisian organists of the 20th century, and was renowned as a composer of virtuoso organ music and deeply spiritual choral works. His Messe Solennelle is one of his most powerful compositions.
Rounding out this program are two scintillating works by the British composer Benjamin Britten, his Te Deum and Jubilate Deo in C major. Sung in English, these works typify the brilliance of Britten, with clear, rhythmic declamation of text above a sparkling organ accompaniment.
