Assassins
The Un-Common Theatre Young Adult Company is proud to present Assassins. Directed by Christa Crewdson (Watertown, Ma) with Music Direction by Chris Charig (Arlington, Ma) and with a cast of 17 talented local young adults, this rarely presented, thought-provoking and alarmingly funny show is perhaps the most controversial musical ever written.
The most American of musicals, Assassins lays bare the lives of nine individuals who assassinated or tried to assassinate the President of the United States, in a historical revusical that explores the dark side of the American experience. From John Wilkes Booth (Ben Goldsmith of Franklin, Ma) to Lee Harvey Oswald (Kevin Hanley of Hopedale, Ma), Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman bend the rules of time and space, taking us on a nightmarish rollercoaster ride in which assassins and would-be assassins from different historical periods meet, interact and in an intense final scene inspire each other to harrowing acts in the name of the American Dream.
An intimate acting piece this version of Assassins, presented on Broadway in 2004, contains some of the finest scene writing in recent memory as well as a brilliant, melodic score which pastiches American music throughout the ages, from folk to ragtime to 1970s soft rock.
With dramatic and insightful set and costume design by cast member and Wagner College student, Jonathan Grenon (Milford, Ma) and all cast members being an integral part of the production team from set building and painting to publicity, ticket sales and program production, The Un-Common Theatre Young Adult Company's presentation of Assassins is a wonderful example of Community Theatre at it's best.
