ROOM: La Barbara + Z
Pamela Z Arts' intimate avant chamber series is proud to present a shared evening of experimental vocal works by extended voice pioneer Joan La Barbara and composer/performer Pamela Z as the first event in the 2014 ROOM Series season.

Each will perform solo works, and the two will perform some improvised and scored duo work. Although some of Ms. Z's works will involve her signature live electronic processing and gesture-controlled sound, Ms. La Barbara's solo work and the duos they perform together will be mainly acoustic  working with the sound of the voices themselves in the room.

This concert will be the only local event in which La Barbara will focus on acoustic voice work (solo and in duo with Pamela Z) during this rare Bay Area visit.

The ROOM Series is an avant chambre music series that takes place at Royce Gallery, an intimate performance gallery in San Francisco's North East Mission Industrial Zone (NEMIZ). Composer/performer Pamela Z hosts evenings featuring a variety of virtuosic, solo artists and chamber groups playing experimental music.

Royce Gallery, 2901 Mariposa Street #18, San Francisco, CA

JOAN LA BARBARA's career as a composer/performer/sound artist explores the human voice as a multi-faceted instrument expanding traditional boundaries in developing a unique vocabulary of experimental and extended vocal techniques: multiphonics, circular singing, ululation and glottal clicks that have become her "signature sounds". Her awards include the American Music Center's Letter of Distinction for significant contributions to the field of contemporary American music (2008); 2013 Civitella Ranieri Fellowship; 2011 Premio Internzionale "Demetrio Stratos" Per la sperimentazione musicale; 2004 Guggenheim Fellowship in Music Composition; DAAD Artist-in-Residency in Berlin and 7 National Endowment for the Arts fellowships; and many more. She's had numerous commissions for concert, theatre and radioworks, including: "in the dreamtime" and "Klangbild Köln" for WestDeutscher Rundfunk, Cologne; "Dragons on the Wall", a music score commissioned by Mary Flagler Cary Trust and "Calligraphy II/Shadows" for voice and Chinese instruments, both for Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company; choral work "to hear the wind roar" for Gregg Smith Singers, I Cantori and the Center for Contemporary Arts/Santa Fe,; "Events in the Elsewhere" from "The Misfortune of the Immortals", funded by Meet the Composer/Lila Wallace; "Awakenings" for chamber ensemble, from the University of Iowa Center for New Music; "l'albero dalle foglie azzurre" (tree of blue leaves) for solo oboe and tape, commissioned by The Saint Louis Symphony, and "A Trail of Indeterminate Light" for cellist who sings. "73 Poems", her collaborative work with text artist Kenneth Goldsmith, was included in "The American Century Part II: SoundWorks" at The Whitney Museum of American Art. PAMELA Z is a San Francisco-based composer/performer and media artist who works primarily with voice, live electronic processing, sampling technology, and video. A pioneer of live digital looping techniques, she creates solo works combining experimental extended vocal techniques, operatic bel canto, found objects, text, digital processing, and MIDI controllers that allow her to manipulate sound with physical gestures. In addition to her solo work, she has been commissioned to compose scores for dance, theatre, film, and new music chamber ensembles including Kronos Quartet and the Bang on a Can Allstars. Her large-scale multi-media works have been presented at venues including Theater Artaud and ODC in SanFrancisco, and The Kitchen in New York, and her media works have been presented in exhibitions at the Whitney Museum (NY) , the Diözesanmuseum (Cologne), and the Krannert Art Museum (IL). Her multi-media opera Wunderkabinet  inspired by the Museum of Jurassic Technology (co-composed with Matthew Brubeck) has been presented at The LAB Gallery (San Francisco), REDCAT (Disney Hall, Los Angeles), and Open Ears Festival, Toronto. Pamela Z has toured extensively throughout the US, Europe, and Japan. She has performed in numerous festivals including Bang on a Can at Lincoln Center (New York), Interlink (Japan), Other Minds (San Francisco), La Biennale di Venezia (Italy), and Pina Bausch Tanztheater Festival (Wuppertal, Germany). She is the recipient of numerous awards including a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Creative Capital Fund, the CalArts Alpert Award in the Arts, The MAP Fund, the ASCAP Music Award, an Ars Electronica honorable mention, and the NEA and Japan/US Friendship Commission Fellowship. She holds a music degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder. For more information visit www.pamelaz.com
