7 pm, Thursday, April 24, 2014 Mercy Corps Action Center 28 SW 1st Avenue Portland, Oregon, 97204
For many developing countries, rice security is food security, and our ability to meet that demand is threatened on several fronts. And yet, scientists continue to develop an astonishing variety of rice that can withstand droughts, floods and improve malnutrition.
Robert Zeigler, the Director General of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI, is passionate spokesperson on a wide range of issues that affect rice growers and consumers worldwide, Zeigler's professional work has taken him to Africa, Latin America, US, and Asia. Aside from a productive research career, his work has expanded to broader crop management issues, the social forces shaping the agricultural environment, and finally the economic and political arena that frames food security and poverty issues. He has published over 100 scientific works in these areas and often serves as an expert resource on rice security in the regional and global media.
