The Poet's Song, a concert by Melodia Women's Choir (Sun May 4)
Melodia's spring 2014 concerts feature the world premiere of a new commission by celebrated Belize-born, London-based composer Errollyn Wallen: "Full Fathom Five," a setting of words from Shakespeare's "The Tempest." This piece, for women's voices, piano, clarinet, flute, timps, and bells, is a dramatic and percussive interpretation of this evocative song. Also on the program are works by Eleanor Daly, Emma Lou Diemer, Duke Ellington, William Mathias, and Alice Parker, set to words by Christina Rossetti, William Blake, and Edward Lear.
Performers include Melodia's 24 voices, Cynthia Powell conductor, with Taisiya Pushkar, piano; Debra Kreisberg, clarinet; Nathalie Joachim, flute; and Michelle Cozzi, percussion. Cynthia Powell and Taisiya Pushkar will join forces to play piano four hands in William Mathias' "Learsongs." This concert will also be performed on Saturday May 3 at 7:30 PM at Holy Apostles Church, Chelsea, NYC.
