Everyday Collectors in association with San Francisco Center for the Book - WORKSHOP
Everyday Collectors in association with San Francisco Center for the Book Mondays, May 4-25, 2009, 6-9pm (OFFSITE at 300 De Haro St., SF) $180/$170 Intersection Members + materials fee
In a twist on traditional scrapbook construction, class participants will become the archaeologists of their daily lives, collecting objects, ephemera, and notes in a handmade book. Participants will create a hand-bound book, discuss collecting and recording, and determine the focus and objective of their personal book. The workshop culminates in a visit to the exhibit Migdalia Valdes: Every Day in Black and White at Intersection for the Arts. Some bookbinding/sewing experience is helpful, but not required.
Instructor: Carolee Gilligan Wheeler www.superdilettante.com) takes some things apart and puts other things back together. By day, she works as a conservation technician at Stanford University, building custom enclosures, doing book repair, and restoring ancient papyrus. In her spare time she collects parking stubs off the ground, creates handmade books, and writes letters. She is an instructor at the San Francisco Center for the Book, where she can often be found digging through the recycling bin for interesting paper scraps.
