Rene Clair & Jean Renoir: Born in Silence
The Girl in the Water / La fille de l'eau (1925). Dir. Jean Renoir. The pot-boiler plot of La fille de leau draws from fairy tales, American film serials and comedies, and French melodramas and realist films. A fair young girl lives on a barge with her father. When he accidentally drowns, she is left alone in a hostile world, and is beset by tragedy after tragedy until her rescuer finally arrives. The stuff of melodrama indeed! The film is fast moving and full of action. This gives Renoir a chance to indulge himself with a plethora of lovingly memorable camera shots, including a surrealist segment that rivals anything by Dali. The girl, Virginia, is played by the beautiful Catherine Hessling, the last model of Jean Renoirs famous father, Pierre Auguste. This film will be shown with Jean Renoirs surrealist short feature: Sur un air de Charleston (1924)
