Rene Clair & Jean Renoir: Born in Silence
The Italian Straw Hat (1928) Directed by Rene Clair. This hilarious comedy of manners is set in Frances Belle Epoque period (ca.1895), and is an unrelenting and unforgiving commentary on the social mores of the bourgeoisie of the time. In crossing the Bois de Vincennes the heros horse nonchalantly eats a ladys straw hat in a bush. This hat belongs to a married lady, who is trysting secretly with her beau. The heros attempt to replace the lost, crucial and apparently unique Italian hat, before the ladys husband notices it is gone, while at the same time preparing for his own wedding that afternoon drives the comedy along at a breakneck pace. The mad cap antics never stop, and this film rivals any comedy coming from the US at that time. This film will shown with Rene Clairs surrealist short feature: Entreacte (1927).
