NEW JERSEY "Ship of Theseus" with Director in Attendance
If the parts of a ship are replaced, bit-by-bit, is it still the same ship?
A blind photographer grapples with the loss of her intuitive brilliance as an aftermath of a clinical procedure; an erudite monk confronting an ethical dilemma with a long held ideology, has to choose between principle and death; and a young stockbroker, following the trail of a stolen kidney, learns how intricate morality could be. Following the separate strands of their philosophical journeys, and their eventual convergence, Ship of Theseus explores questions of identity, justice, beauty, meaning and death.
Anand Gandhi's 'Ship of Theseus' premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2012, where festival director, Cameron Bailey declared it "the hidden gem of the year". Since then, the film has travelled to several international film festivals, winning many top awards at Transilvania, Tokyo, Dubai, and Mumbai to name a few.
The film was also chosen as one of 15 most 'life-changing' films of all time by the Critics' Circle, UK. Ship of Theseus was the only contemporary film on that list, which comprised classics like Annie Hall, Raging Bull, Battle of Algiers, and Hamlet.
Ship of Theseus released across India in July 2013. In an unprecedented initiative by the distributors, the film was opened up to viewers who could vote for the film to come to their city. Audiences across India remained enthralled by the film, bringing it to 31 cities at its peak, and keeping the film in theatres for over six weeks. In Australia, the film was presented by the legendary actor, Hugo Weaving (The Matrix, Lord of the Rings, Cloud Atlas) and had a two-week run in cinemas.
Ship of Theseus is Anand Gandhi's first film.
