You've learned the basics of the personal essay. But how do you keep the magic going day after day, week after week, year after year? In this four-week class, Natasha Vargas-Cooper will help you take your essay and freelancing skills to the next level. She'll show you how to write essays so good, editors will keep coming back for more. You'll learn to how to evaluate your ideas, write glorious prose, and troubleshoot problematic arcs. She will teach you how to transform your rough drafts into publishable essays. Natasha will also discuss approaching contacts, sending pitches, and etiquette issues. Students will have the opportunity to bring questions to class and get them answered. By the end of the class, you'll have finished 1-2 essays and be well on your way to joining the ranks of the 51 published Writing Pad Alums and have acquired the freelancing skills to keep getting your name in print! We have helped 51 students get paid and published for their work in publications such as Self, Marie Claire, LA Times, Salon, Spirit Magazine, and New York Magazine. You're next.
Note: Class is only open to people who have taken previous multi-week personal essay classes at Writing Pad or who have considerable essay-writing or journalism experience (write to marilyn@writingpad.com and ask).

About Natasha Vargas-Cooper: Natasha Vargas Cooper is a journalist whose essays and articles have been published in The New York Times, Atlantic Monthly, The Guardian, Wall Street Journal, GQ, The New Republic, Out, Spin, The New Statesman, New York Magazine, The Telegraph, Los Angeles Magazine, BookForum, Russia GQ, The Morning News, Pacific Standard, Buzzfeed, The New Inquiry, Elle, Slake, In Style, Latina, Blackbook, Bullett, Good, The Awl, Salon, E! Online, The Daily Beast, The Daily, The Hairpin, and Gawker. She is also the author of Mad Men Unbuttoned: A Romp Through 1960's America and runs the monthly storytelling series called Public School. Natasha spent several years working as a union organizer and a health policy analyst for a labor union in Los Angeles and Washington D.C. She holds a Bachelor's degree from UCLA in History and Public Policy.
